Degraded uplands, marginal and unproductive landholdings, rain-fed agriculture, traditional implements and techniques and limited seasonal employment are the main reasons for poverty. Patneswari Agricultural Cooperative Limited under Umbrella programme for Natural Resource Management brought wasteland areas under forest cover and developed sustainable economic activities using wood harvesting, intercropping and possible additional revenue through transaction of carbon credits. This has not only increased the poor farmers’ regular income but also enhanced their capacities and entrepreneurial skills.
